Laundry symbols: read the whole label

The laundry basket is not the best place to discover that your favourite hoodie needs different care from the T-shirts beside it. Before choosing a programme, find the label inside the garment. Read the complete row of instructions, not just the first number you recognise. That small pause makes the next decision much clearer.

Start with the shapes

The tub refers to washing, the triangle to bleaching, the square to drying, the iron to ironing and the circle to professional care. A crossed-out symbol rules out that treatment. You do not have to remember everything at once. Look up the instruction you are about to use, then check what comes next. Choosing a wash programme without reading the drying instruction leaves half the decision unfinished.

Check the actual garment

Start with the label on the item you own. Two black tops can look similar and still need different care. A collection name, colour or general fabric description does not tell you everything about the finished garment. Details such as a print or added trim are another reason to read the complete instructions instead of borrowing a routine from something else in your wardrobe.

If the product page and the label seem to disagree, do not guess which instruction to ignore. Keep a photograph of the label and ask the store about that particular item before choosing a treatment. A clear photo is more useful than a description such as “the little square symbol”.

Decide how it will dry before washing

Think about the full routine before starting the machine. Where will you dry the garment, and does its label permit the method you intended to use? A programme that suits the washing instruction does not automatically make your usual drying routine suitable too.

Keep that decision practical. Read the label while the item is still dry and easy to handle. If a setting on your machine is unfamiliar, check its manual rather than assuming a programme name gives the same treatment on every machine.

Put the outfit back together

Once you have checked care, the next question is how you want to wear the piece. Browse the current hoodies and sweatshirts or T-shirts, and read the information for the model you choose. The care label remains the reference for your own garment.

Do similar items share one washing rule?

Not necessarily. Read each label before grouping clothes into the same load. If an instruction is missing or unreadable, seek the information for the exact product rather than deciding from its appearance.
