Choosing a T-shirt to wear under a sweater
The T-shirt you like on its own may not be the one you reach for under a sweater. Once you add another garment, its collar, sleeves and hem become part of a different outline. Start with the sweater or sweatshirt you actually plan to wear. Then choose a tee that works underneath it, rather than assuming every base layer is interchangeable.
Decide whether the neckline will show
Try the two pieces together and look at the collar without adjusting it into a position it will not keep. A visible band of T-shirt can be part of the outfit. If you want it hidden, choose a combination that does that naturally instead of constantly pulling one neckline below the other.
Look again after moving your arms. A neckline that only works while you stand perfectly still is unlikely to be the easiest everyday choice. Colour matters here too: a contrasting collar draws more attention to the overlap.
Check where the sleeves sit
Put your arms forward and then relax them. Notice whether the T-shirt sleeves sit smoothly or collect inside the outer layer. If they bunch, try another sleeve shape before automatically choosing a smaller tee. A size change affects more than the part that bothers you.
The outer garment needs room for the layer you intend to wear, but that does not mean every sweater should be bought larger. Judge the actual pair together. Your usual size in one model does not settle how two different garments will interact.
Choose the hem deliberately
Do you want the T-shirt visible below the sweater? If so, look at the amount that shows and how it sits above the trousers. If not, try a shorter base layer or another combination of lengths. Folding fabric inside to hide it may create a shape you did not want.
Sit down before deciding. A tidy hem in the mirror can move once you settle into a chair. That is not necessarily a problem, but it is better to know whether you will keep adjusting it during the day.
Remember the moment you remove a layer
You may take the sweater off indoors. Make sure the T-shirt also works by itself with the trousers you chose. Check the fit you want across the shoulders and the length you are happy to show.
There is no single fabric or cut that makes every layering combination right. Read the individual product information and use your own two garments as the test. A useful base layer is one that works in both versions of the outfit.
